Volunteers

Volunteers are very important to the kindergarten program; sign-up now so you can help in our classroom or attend field trips as a chaperone.

If you are able to consistently dedicate a morning of your time each week please let me know as soon as possible.

What would you do?
-work with children to improve literacy skills (letters, sounds, sight words, handwriting formation, story writing, etc)
-strengthen math skills (numeral Identification, counting skills, etc.)
-listen to and/or read books specific to a child's level
-assist with assessment and weekly monitoring of skills

Tips for Helping From Home!
I understand that every parent cannot make it into our classroom to volunteer. You are however, a vital key to your child's education and there are many things you can do from home.

Help your child become a better reader by practicing with them every night. There are many ways to encourage better reading. Listed below are just a few ideas...

*Read to them
*Listen to them read a book to you
*Practice reading and writing sight words
*Practice color, shape, and number words
*Play word family games
*Act out Nursery Rhymes
*Buddy read together-you read a page and they read a page
*Ask them questions about the books they read at school
*Make a video or CD of your child reading out loud
*Encourage your child to write about topics of interest or activities you do together
*Play verbal games with your child while driving in the car
*Ask your child to find something that begins with the B sound: bee, bird, etc.
*Ask your child to look for something that ends with the R sound: car, Kroger, etc.
*Make flash card games to practice Math skills

You could even help from home by creating resources from Pinterest that we could use in our classroom during instruction.  If you are interested, please let me, Ms. Mayfield, know and I'll send you the activity we currently need.

An additional way to help our classroom from home is to turn the monthly pictures I take of the class and turn them into a picture slideshow to share with all parents/guardians.  I just need someone to create it.

Reading with your Child
Reading daily is the single most important thing that you can do for your child to help them have future success. Please take the time each week to read and discuss Library books! You can have your child find letters and/or words we are working on every night, make predictions, and talk about authors. It is amazing what ten minutes a day can do for your child!

Kindergarten students who are struggling in reading only need 30 minutes a day to get them caught back up. Fourth graders struggling in reading will require 2 hours every day to get them reading on grade level.      Read! Read! Read!
